Interview with Yael Pittman

by on Jan.03, 2013, under World

A while ago I became Facebook friends with Yael. I am almost positive it is because of our mutual friend Kosha Dillz. I thought it was fitting to learn more about Jewish wigs and what better way than to speak with someone who washes and styles wigs for a living. Take a listen to my lively conversation with Yael and enjoy!

Fela! is coming to Detroit!

by on Feb.12, 2012, under World

In the 1980′s Coleman Young presented Fela Kuti with the key to the City of Detroit, finally the spirit of Fela will be returning to breath some revolution back into the city. Starting this week you will be able to relive the music of Fela Kuti live at the Detroit Music Hall. February 14th-26th the the life of Fela will be remembered, from the Charles H. Wright African American History Museum to The Music Hall, and the city will be alive with afrobeat. Detroit is the perfect place to honor the revolutionary memory of Fela Kuti. With the whole world standing in solidarity against oppression from Lagos to Detroit, the message of Fela speaks to the timeless theme of decolonization. A few weeks ago I had the honor of speaking with Fela’s former manager Rikki Stein who had some fantastic stories to share about the life of Fela. I feel this is the best format for an oral history of one of the 20th centuries most revolutionary musicians. Take a listen and enjoy! If you would like for information on the festivities going on surrounding Fela Kuti this Black History Month you can check out http://www.felaonbroadway.com/ (play) Charles H. Interview with Omar Offendum

by on Oct.21, 2011, under Hip-Hop, World

The first time I heard of Offendum was, on the big homie Big A’s album, on the song “Te-Le-Le-Vision”. Then this past March my friend Saman called me, from the concert “Gaza Strip to Detroit”, trying to locate  a studio so all the fantastic artists at this event could collaborate (including Omar Offendum). Throughout the course of the Arab Spring I have been following many sources in and outside the Middle East on Twitter, and many of them are huge supporters of Omar Offendum. This dude is everywhere for a good reason. Finally this summer I decided I needed to speak with this dude so we arranged to meet, at the Arab American Museum in Dearborn this September, before his concert. In this interview we talk about everything between Syria and architecture and then some. Take a listen and enjoy!

Along with his Celtic music he also has a few solo projects that he performs and promotes. Gerard is a very busy man and is a great guitar player. Take a listen and enjoy the live music Gerard was nice enough to supply us with!

Interview with Waleed Abdulhamid

by on Apr.19, 2010, under World

I had the distinct honor of speaking with Waleed who happens to be a composer and musician. This guy seriously does it all (I am not joking look at some of the videos on http://letsfindaway.ca ). It was a pleasure to gain his perspective on charity after the earthquake in Haiti. Waleed and the project he is part of, “Lets find a way”, are organized to raise money for the world AIDS crisis. Take a listen to my interview with Waleed let us know what you think!
