I ran into a group a guys wearing pink jackets on the streets of Austin hauling around luggage. So I thought to myself, “hey let’s see if they are in a band.” My intuitions were wrong, they were actually in a comedy troupe. Before Tim left for Libya after the fall Gaddafi (see also Kadafi and Qaddafi) I had the opportunity to speak with him. Tim is a reporter for the Tri-County Times and was on a mission to document one Flint Area family upon their return to Libya after the revolution. Besides being a fantastic reporter he is also a photographer and musician. My first interview during SXSW was with Pierre and Victor of Housse De Racket. They are an incredible duo out of Paris France with fantastic stories to tell. Besides being a great band they are also thoughtful. A few weeks after I had interviewed them I received and e-mail from their tour manager, in order to put me on the list for their show at the Magic Stick during their stop in Detroit on their American Tour. Fela! is coming to Detroit!

In the 1980′s Coleman Young presented Fela Kuti with the key to the City of Detroit, finally the spirit of Fela will be returning to breath some revolution back into the city. Starting this week you will be able to relive the music of Fela Kuti live at the Detroit Music Hall. February 14th-26th the the life of Fela will be remembered, from the Charles H. Wright African American History Museum to The Music Hall, and the city will be alive with afrobeat. Detroit is the perfect place to honor the revolutionary memory of Fela Kuti. With the whole world standing in solidarity against oppression from Lagos to Detroit, the message of Fela speaks to the timeless theme of decolonization. A few weeks ago I had the honor of speaking with Fela’s former manager Rikki Stein who had some fantastic stories to share about the life of Fela. I feel this is the best format for an oral history of one of the 20th centuries most revolutionary musicians. Take a listen and enjoy!
